Flexible Workers: The Politics of Homework in Postindustrial Britain

Abstract This article opens up a new perspective on market liberalism's triumph in the late twentieth century through an examination of political battles that were fought Britain over regulation homework. Ubiquitous Victorian era, this form waged labor was curtailed by Edwardian wage regulations but resurged 1970s as result competition from low-wage economies abroad and fast-changing consumer tastes. Alongside growing use homeworkers industries, information technologies made it increasingly possible for some forms professional work to move into home. explores debates swirled around these different homework, pitting antipoverty campaigners, feminists, activists against ministers, employers, civil servants. It shows how Conservative New Labour governments failed recognize structural similarities between Victorian-style “sweated” emerging world telework, freelancing, self-employment, intellectual excitement generated Britain's transition toward postindustrial future dovetailed with Right commitment deregulation creation “flexible” markets.
